Funga credits Menzo after first goal

The Zambia international joined the Urban Warriors from Zanaco FC in January and opened his account for his new club in the Absa Premiership at the weekend, although his goal was not enough to rescue the game as Ajax eventually lost 2-1.

However, Funga was still able to take positives from his own performance, and his strike, while crediting Menzo for helping him get off the mark with the Mother City outfit.

“I would just like to thank God, the coach, my fellow players – especially the coach for the opportunity, without that opportunity I wouldn’t have scored that goal,” Funga told his club’s official website.

“I am very happy to have scored my first goal in the PSL, it is not easy. The guys here are very hard, the league had already started when I came in, half of the season had already been played – I have picked up slowly but surely and I am really happy to have scored my first goal for the club.”

Like Funga, fellow Zambian and Ajax team-mate Rodrick Kabwe also scored his first goal for Ajax last month.

“It was always like that, especially in Zambia. Whenever he [Rodrick] scored, I had to score also – most of our goals; we scored in the same games. When he scored I have to score and vice versa,” Funga added.

The forward also underlined the importance of Ajax returning to winning ways when they face relegation-threatened Highlands Park on Wednesday, saying: “We are working hard, the position we find ourselves in is not good. We just need to work together and be united; that is the most important thing, to remain united.”
