Resurgent Stellies stun SuperSport

Premiership

SuperSport United suffered a third straight defeat in all competitions after going down 1-0 to Stellenbosch FC in the Absa Premiership on Friday evening.

Botswana international Thatayaone Ditlhokwe got a rare start with Thamsanqa Gabuza dropped to the bench. Meanwhile, Asavela Mbekile and Nathan Sinkala both made their second appearances for Stellies.

Stellies conjured up the evening’s first attempt when Ryan Moon leaped to a diagonal ball from Iqraam Rayners, but SuperSport shot-stopper Ronwen Williams got across to gather on ten minutes.

Tempo began picking up shortly afterwards, with United fashioning in their first attempt on the half-hour mark with a dangerously looking free-kick from Teboho Mokoena.

Bradley Grobler had the perfect chance to put United ahead a minute to halftime, but his snap-shot from a cross by Sipho Mbule failed to bother the returning Lee Langeveldt.

No side made a change following the start of the second half, however good work from Mbule sent Kudakwashe Mahachi through on goal before Langeveldt rushed off his line to thwart the Zimbabwean.

Steve Barker introduced the encounter’s first change 56 minutes gone with Waseem Isaacs, who was on target in the reverse fixture, replacing Ovidy Karuru.

The switch proved timeous as it coincided with his side hitting the breakthrough within 60 minutes after Sinkala was offered the freedom in the area to head home a corner.

Stellies could’ve gone further ahead seven minutes later after Mbekile beat Clayton Daniels to possession for a close-range attempt, which Williams parried in the end.

Langeveldt denied the visitors the equaliser in the remaining minutes of the second half as he got down to pluck Mbule’s low shot from the bottom corner, steering his side back to winning ways in the process.
