Polokwane edge Citizens in thriller

Premiership

Polokwane City eased their relegation fears in the Absa Premiership with a 3-2 victory over Cape Town City on Sunday afternoon.

Fagrie Lakay, Mpho Makola as well as goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh returned for the Citizens, while Njabulo Buthelezi slotted straight back in for the hosts after returning from suspension.

Jabulani Maluleke looked to give the hosts an early lead with a shot from range, but the attempt failed to bring Leeuwenburgh to action nor rattle the back of the net.

Rise and Shine eventually hit the front foot inside ten minutes through Walter Musona, leaving the Citizens to orchestrate a comeback.

Comeback the Citizens did as left-back Edmilson Dove came up with a towering header past Cyril Chibwe in the opposing goal 19 minutes gone.

Ten minutes later, Polokwane regained the lead when Eden Nene managed to connect with a cross to head past Leeuwenburgh.

Jan Olde Riekerink made a change straight after the break, as Mduduzi Mdantsane replaced Roland Putsche.

Edmilson pushed for his second goal to bring the game level inside the 58th minute, but the defence rallied back to stave off his powerful attempt.

Captain Fielies clawed the Citizens back into the contest two minutes later as he rose above the defence to head into an unguarded net.

Rise and Shine, however, regained the lead through Puleng Tlolane, who fired home a ball from Maluleke following with 15 minutes remaining in the encounter.

The Citizens finished with a man down with three minutes to go after Ioannis Potouridis received a straight red card while pushing for the equaliser.

In the end, Rise and Shine marched on to their second win of the year to move from the foot of the table, leaving the Citizens in 11th spot.
