Chiefs slip up against Stellies

Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs had to settle for a point after playing to a 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch in Absa Premiership action on Sunday night.

The Amakhosi gave Siphelele Ntshangase his first start as Yagan Sasman and Siyabonga Ngezana earned recalls in defence, while the Western Cape outfit were without Robyn Johannes due to injury.

Chiefs targeted a fast start after Reeve Frosler opened space from the far side on 13 minutes for a low rasping strike, but Stellies shot-stopper Lee Langeveldt got down to collect.

A glancing header from Ngezana after a well-taken corner-kick by Bernard Parker 25 minutes in skimmed narrowly past the far corner, as the Amakhosi continued probing.

Chiefs then introduced Serbian-born Samir Nurkovic just after a minute as Leonardo Castro nibbled off the field with a knee injury.

However, it ws Stellenbosch who hit the front against the run of play after 35 minutes when good work on the left by Ashley Du Preez resulted in a cross for Leletu Skelem, who headed into the bottom corner.

The visitors were also forced into a substitution in the final minute of the half as Nathan Sinkala had his place taken by Kristopher Bergman following an injury.

Three substitutions at one go for Chiefs at halftime saw Lazarous Kambole, Dumisani Zuma and Kgotso Moleko introduced as Ernst Middendorp looked for a turnaround, as Ntshangase, Khama Billiat and Ntiya-Ntiya dropped to the bench.

Kambole got stuck in 58 minutes gone after cutting in from the left to bring the best out of Langeveldt with a fiery close-range strike inside the area.

The Zambian made his presence felt following the last 20 minutes when he controlled a looping ball into the area to slot beyond Langeveldt for his first goal for the club.

Stellenbosch almost regained the lead minutes to the end, but Du Preez went into the side-netting from a cross with the Amakhosi caught square leaving the spoils shared in Soweto.
