The major talking point in the build-up was the tragic death of Maritzburg United midfielder Mlondi Dlamini in a car accident. Following the fatal crash, the Team of Choice failed in their attempts to get the match postponed.
Despite all the hype surrounding the fixture, there was not much in the way of first half action.
Mark Mayambela had a few promising moments on attack and Daniel Akpeyi made a fine save to keep the scores level in the 42nd minute — but all in all, neither of the two sides appeared particularly threatening.
They went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
In the 53rd minute, a Mayambela free-kick rattled the crossbar as Chippa went within inches of taking the lead.
Both teams continued to search for an opener and Chippa went close again as debutant Samuel Julies hit the post in the 80th minute. However, neither was able to find the net before the full-time whistle.
Chippa picked up their fifth consecutive draw since Teboho Moloi took over from Dan Malesela and extended their winless streak to six matches.
Meanwhile, Maritzburg failed to win for the fifth league match running, with their impressive start to the season but a distant memory.
Maritzburg now have nine points from seven Premiership fixtures, while the Chilli Boys have eight from eight.
