Baroka FC returned to winning ways after a 2-0 victory over Black Leopards in the Absa Premiership’s Limpopo derby on Sunday afternoon.
Leopards welcomed back Donashano Malama, Cuthbert Malajila and Robert Ng'ambi, while Mduduzi Mdantsane and Terrence Tisdell returned for Bakgaga Ba Ga Mphahlele.
The home side provided a few danger signs from kick-off, but their provincial counterparts maintained a strong defensive shape while playing on the counter-attack.
Mfanafuthi Shozi eventually gifted the visitors the lead two minutes from the half-hour mark after Jonas Mendes failed to pick up a corner kick at the near post, allowing the defender to tap home from point-blank range.
Leopards slowed down immensely afterwards and misplaced passes particularly in the final third only worsened their cause to a response. Unchanged from the break, Baroka flew out of the starting blocks with Gerald Phiri Junior’s cross-field ball putting Mendes in a spot of bother.
Wedson Nyirenda surprisingly opted for an offensive change on 52 minutes despite their advantage, as Phiri made way for Collins Makgaka. Leopards responded with a few efforts of their own in the first seven minutes, but Mwape Musonda failed to profit on either occasion.
Momentum stayed with Bakgaga, who doubled their tally on 68 minutes from a two-man counter as Tshidiso Patjie collected Makgaka’s pass to curl into the back of the net from distance.
The hosts were knocked off their shelve thereafter, as Bakgaga managed the encounter sufficiently well to bag all the points to go into sixth spot.
