Chippa United secured their first victory in the Absa Premiership this campaign after a 2-0 success away to AmaZulu on Saturday night.
Chippa made as many as five changes from the loss to Kaizer Chiefs in Veli Mothwa, Geraldine Damons, Kelvin Moyo, Mzikayise Mashaba and Thabo Rakhale. Meanwhile, Ovidy Karuru formed Usuthu’s only change from the win over Stellenbosch FC.
The home side were on the back foot right from kick-off after poor defending allowed Rakhale in on goal, but fortunately the former Orlando Pirates fired astray with the goal at his mercy.
A setback as early as the 14th minute forced Chippa to a change after Mashaba struggled to carry on playing and was replaced by Phetso Maphanga in the fullback role.
Usuthu pushed on the front foot following the half-hour mark and instigated the expertise of Bonginkosi Ntuli following a cross from Mbongeni Gumede, however the forward failed to pounce.
Usuthu managed to maintain the make-up of their structure from a defensive and offensive point of view following the restart, but the visitors still possessed the all-round momentum on all fronts.
That said, the Port Elizabeth-based side seized control on 63 minutes when William Twala’s snap shot in the area deflected off Thapelo Nyongo before going past Siyabonga Mbatha.
Usuthu gave a debut to Tsepo Masilela after 81 minutes, as Jozef Vukusic made attempts to get back in the contest. Twala however grabbed a brace in the final four minutes following a swift counter-attack to see his side to their first win of the campaign.
Usuthu, as a result, were brought back to earth following back-to-back victories, while Chippa pick up their first league win since May.
