Wits off to flying start at Usuthu

Premiership

Bidvest Wits moved to the top of the Absa Premiership table after defeating AmaZulu 3-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night.

Brendon Petersen, Zitha Macheke and Sameehg Doutie were issued with debuts for the Clever Boys, as Andre De Jong debuted alongside Bonginkosi Ntuli upfront for the home side.

Petersen redeemed himself after a poor defensive clearance in the opening seven minutes with back-to-back saves from Nhlanhla Vilakazi and Thembela Sikhakhane respectively. From the 13th minute, Terrence Dzvukamanja pounced on a defensive clearance from the edge of the area to head into an empty net.

AmaZulu struggled to get into rhythm despite a few near-misses, with Wits dictating play on all fronts of the spectrum.

The Students secured a second on 39 minutes after Deon Hotto combined with Dzvukamanja to beat Moeneeb Josephs at the near post.

With their backs to the wall, Lehlohonolo Majoro replaced Butholezwe Ncub at the break to kick off his second stint with the club.

However, The Clever Boys extended their tally ten minutes into the second half when Thulani Hlatshwayo headed Keegan Ritchie’s free-kick in at the near post.

Hlatshwayo closed-in on a brace on 65 minutes, but the Bafana Bafana captain headed off target on this occasion as the Clever Boys went in search of more goals.

The Students instituted their first change of the evening moments thereafter, with Elias Pelembe replacing Doutie.

Wits missed a great chance to bag a fourth when Carl Lark fired wide close the area, with Josephs in no man’s land in the final minute. Regardless, the Clever Boys marched to an opening day victory with Usuthu off to a demoralising start at home.
