10th new coaching pair for Derby

The first league Soweto Derby in the 25th season of the modern-day PSL era will have yet another new pair coaches for the tenth consecutive year.

Gavin Hunt and Josef Zinnbauer will face off for points for the first time in the DStv Premiership as coaches of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates respectively.

To demonstrate the nature of change in this fixture – by far the biggest in Southern Africa – only once has there been the same coaches on either bench for all four league games over two consecutive seasons since 1996.

That rare occurrence came in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons, when Chiefs had Vladimir Vermezovic while Rudi Krol led the dressing room at Pirates.

In other years there has always been a change in the dugout in the second season for either Amakhosi or The Buccaneers.

Last season Ernst Middendorp was in charge in Naturena, while Rhulani Mokwena was barking out instructions for the Mayfair-based outfit in the first league match, before the latter was succeeded by Zinnbauer in the next.

In the 2018/19 season Chiefs had Giovanni Solinas for the first-round tie and then Middendorp in the second game, while Milutin Sredojevic ran the rule at Pirates.

For the 2017/18 campaign it was Steve Komphela versus Sredojevic, while the season before saw Komphela up against Muhsin Ertugral first and then Kjell Jonevret for the reverse leg tie.

Through the 2015/16 season Komphela had taken over from Stuart Baxter and was up against Eric Tinkler.

In the three years that Baxter was at Chiefs, he came up against Roger de Sa, Vermezovic and Tinkler at Pirates, while the 2011/12 season had VV at Chiefs with Julio Leal and Augusto Palacios at the other end.

In all the years prior to both VV and Krol being in charge at Chiefs and Pirates respectively, there was no pair of coaches that led the two clubs in both fixtures for two seasons in a row.

Chiefs started from Walter da Silva in 1996 and changed coaches all the way to Ertugral in 2008 while Pirates began the same period with Ronald Mkandawire until they had Owen da Gama just before Krol took over.
