Pitso's Ahly learn CWC fate, lodge protest

Pitso Mosimane

Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly have learned who they will face at the FIFA Club World Cup, while the team has also lodged a protest against the tournament organisers.

Reigning African champions Al Ahly have discovered their fate at the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar where the Egyptian giants have been drawn against Mexican side Monterrey in the Second Round of the competition.

Pitso Mosimane's side is set to get their campaign underway in February next year and will meet South American champions Palmeiras in the semi-final if they are able to advance beyond their opening match.

Meanwhile, Al Ahly, who ended third at last year's edition of the Club World Cup, have lodged a protest against the dates for the competition, which is set to clash with the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

Up to 10 players from the Team of the Century could thus be called away for international duty, leaving Mosimane and his coaching staff short of options and at a notable disadvantage for the prestigious club competition.

You can read Al Ahly's full statement below:

Al Ahly SC will send official letters on Tuesday to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), requesting the three parties to collaborate to resolve the clash of dates between the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup.

The FIFA Club World Cup will be held in the UAE between 3 and 12 February which clashes with the dates of the Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held between 9 January and 6 February in Cameroon.

Al Ahly SC have more than seven players at the Egyptian national team’s squad in addition to three foreign players who will represent their national teams in the competition, which will impact our participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.
