Big-spending Mamelodi Sundowns had the inside lane on Sredojevic’s Orlando Pirates to claiming league honours heading into the weekend, and managed to achieve the feat with a 3-1 win over Ajax Cape Town on Saturday.
'Micho', however, has earned plaudits for reviving Bucs after they finished outside of the top eight for the first time in PSL history last term, placing 11th on the table under the collective watch of Muhsin Ertugral, Augusto Palacios and Kjell Jonevret.
Fadlu Davids has also put himself in contention for individual honours, as unfashionable Maritzburg United have reached a maiden Nedbank Cup final and look set to better their highest ever seventh-placed league finish last term. They are currently fourth in the standings.
Free State Stars' Luc Eymael is likewise in the mix for guiding Ea Lla Koto, who narrowly survived relegation last term, to sixth in the standings and the Nedbank Cup decider.
When asked about the frontrunners for the coaching gong prior to the weekend, Brazilians mentor Mosimane gave credit to the likes of Davids for working wonders with modest budgets, but feels the achievements of wealthy teams are too quickly discredited at times.
He said: "What about Micho? Doesn’t he deserve it? Micho took the team from 11 to where it is. Do you know what they say, ‘no, we should not give it to the team that has finances and give it to the team [that has no finances]’... So we are running a social responsibility here? Huh? What you call it, welfare? NGOs?
“‘When you are poor you should be coach of the year?’ Okay. Who is the coach of the year in England? Nobody cares what budget he has.
“So when you are a small coach, work yourself up to coach the top team and have the same capability.
“Even publications. The biggest publications will always have the advantage on the younger ones. So now we must work for the smaller ones because we are running a welfare [organisation]? You must also get paid.
“So this thing of saying, ‘no [he should win it] because he works with a shoe-string budget'. What shoe-string budget? It’s football. We are not here for welfare... we don’t want that.
“Football, okay, before I came here, didn’t they have the same budget? Maybe more than me and then? Why didn’t they win?”
