'Tyson can bring another Pirates treble'

Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi believes the signing of Thulani Hlatshwayo will go a long way to helping the club win silverware once again – possibly even another treble.

Lekgwathi made history when he captained the Soweto giants to consecutive treble-winning campaigns under Dutch tactician Ruud Krol in 2010/11 and 2011/12.

The former Pirates central defender believes with Hlatshwayo in the side, it is possible for the current Buccaneers team to emulate what they did a few years back.

Lekgwathi says the signing of 'Tyson' has taken him back to the time when Siyabonga Sangweni arrived at the club.

"I think it's a good signing you understand," Lekgwathi tells KickOff.com.

"Especially the signing of Hlatshwayo you understand, because we need someone like him at the back. Most people have been saying, 'You know since Lekgwathi and Sangweni retired there's been no replacement.' But if you can have a look at Hlatshwayo, if you remember us, we used to score and defend at the same time.

"I think he is that type of a player, he can score and defend. He is a leader you see. So he reminds me of Sangweni. When we signed Sangweni he was also with Bafana Bafana. He was a key player in Bafana Bafana. So it's the same with Hlatshwayo. When he arrived Sangweni added depth to the team, and Hlatshwayo is going to do the same. He will bring his experience.

"At the moment, yes, the team is playing but the only problem is that we concede goals, soft goals you understand. So that's why I'm saying he is going to help us because to win games and silverware you must not concede after scoring."

Lekgwathi says the Soweto giants don't need to sign too many players and can even challenge for a treble next season.

"I think we have a good team you understand. The year before last we finished in second position and we went to sign six, seven players. Yes, it was good because we were playing Champions League. I was telling some of the supporters that after winning the treble the chairman went on to sign another seven players. When they got there, they were introduced one by one," he recalls.

"They started with Siya Sangweni and he adjusted. Then it was Benni [McCarthy], after that it was Thabo Matlaba. Recently we went to sign six players and after that what does the coach do? He plays all of them at the same time, which was our downfall. There's a possibility of another treble. Yes, it's something you can't predict it but if you tell yourself that, 'I want to achieve this...'

"I remember being asked if we can win a treble. I said, 'Ja, we can win a treble.' The chairman came into the dressing room and said, 'Your captain says you can win a treble.' The boys said, 'Yes chairman, we spoke about this, we want it.' And we got it you understand.

"Even now if they can take one game at a time. You know what? They have a good team, I'm telling you. You know to compare this team to ours, this one all of them they are so fit and energetic. Ours was ageing, running with one foot. But these boys yesses, the way they run. It's just that they are unlucky, they score and after that they concede. They need leaders. The strikers after scoring, they must tell the defenders.

"You know the likes of [Thulasizwe)] Mbuyane and Benni after scoring they would tell the defenders, 'Hey don't concede!' [Gabadinho] Mhango is a senior player, after scoring a goal he must tell the defenders not to concede you understand. If the senior players can come to the party then I have no doubt that Pirates can win silverware."
