Adebayor: Togo must honour Cabinda victims

Three people were killed and several injured when the Sparrow Hawks bus came under gun-fire as they made their way to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.

Serge Akakpo and Daré Nibombé, two of the players in the current Afcon squad, were amongst the injured, while Adebayor was also on the bus.

As Togo gear up for their quarterfinal clash with Burkina Faso at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday, the Tottenham Hotspur striker is imploring his teammates to play with their hearts on their sleeves; to do everything they can to book a place in the last four.

“It’s a good thing [reaching the knockout stages] for the country and a good thing for me. I hope now we have a chance to win the cup. We just have to go for it,” he said.

“It’s a historic thing. We feel very sorry for those people [who were killed in the bus attack]. We had a nice team together, and some of those people have gone.

“It’s a tough one. I’m very proud of my country, of what we have been through.”
