FIFA has listed what it refers to as some of the enchanting players who have come to the fore during the 2012 AFCON qualifiers, and who could emulate the likes of Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o and Michael Essien on the path to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Serero, who is now with Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam, features in select XI along with Zimbabwean striker and former Kaizer Chiefs hitman Knowledge Musona – now at German Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Botswana international Mogogi Gabonamong, who plays for SuperSport United, is also named in that exclusive group.
Other stars are Congolese Delvin Ndinga, Wilfried Bony (Ivory Coast), Jordan Ayew (Ghana), Cheikh Diabate (Mali), Youseff Al Arabi (Morocco), Moussa Maazou (Niger), James Obi (Nigeria) and Moussa Sow (Senegal).
Serero, named the best footballer in the PSL last season, is described by FIFA as “diminutive but tricky, providing a hint of unpredictable genius that coach Pitso Mosimane says he is looking for”.
Musona has been included on the basis of his fine form in the qualifiers for the Warriors, where he has scored three goals, while Gabonamong has provided steel and strength for the biggest surprises in the African game, Botswana.
