Abafana Bes’thende went into the match against United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium having been beaten 3-0 at home in their league opener, but they were unable to change their fortunes after Mame Niang scored an 83rd minute winner for the home side.
The only bright spot for Arrows was a first goal for the club by new striker Katlego Mashego, who levelled matters at 1-1 early in the second half after SuperSport’s Atusaye Nyondo had opened the scoring just before the break.
Nyondo was the dominant figure in the first half and had several opportunities to put his side ahead in the early stages.
Arrows also had their attacking moments in the first half, with Katlego Mashego and Collins Mbesuma forming a potent partnership that were a handful for centre-backs Nasief Morris and Morgan Gould.
However, Nyondo scored his first goal in a SuperSport shirt on the stroke of half time, leaving the score 1-0 in favour of the hosts at the break.
Arrows were quick to come up with an equaliser in the second half, with Mashego heading home from Siyabonga Nkosi’s cross in the 51st minute to make it 1-1.
Two minutes later United again hit the woodwork, with midfielder John Arwuah blasting his shot against the crossbar. The Ghanaian really should have scored to put the hosts back in the lead but failed to find the back of the net.
SuperSport finally came good on their attacking promise with seven minutes of regulation time left when Niang got on the end of a fine cross from Laffor and scored with a trademark header to put SuperSport 2-1 up.
