A single goal from Brent Carelse handed his side a 1-0 win over Dinaledi at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was a game of two halves as the Stars dictated the first 45 minutes and then two clever substitutions by Gavin Hunt saw his side dominate the second stanza.
The home side clearly settled quicker and had the best of the chances in the first half, with Bradley Grobler their star player.
Grobler shot a powerful ball over the crossbar early on, before beating a couple of defenders and firing on goal a few minutes later – although his shot was off target again.
SuperSport’s only chance of the half came three minutes before the break when Daine Klate failed to round off a good passing movement by his side. After receiving the ball in side the 18 yard box, in space, he failed to direct his shot on target as it slipped inches past the post.
Hunt made two substitutions in an effort to change the game. Dario Monteiro was replaced by Brian Umony while Thabo Mongalo came on for Siyabonga Nkosi.
The changes had an immediate effect as a Mongalo shot from the edge of the 18 yard box in the 48th minute just skimmed the wrong side of the upright.
United continued to press forward in stifled attacks and just as it looked like it would not be their night.
But Brent Carelse broke the deadlock in the 71st minute, latching onto a low cross from Jabu Maluleke and showing class and composure to finish from 12 yards out.
Stars tried to find their way back into the game but a resolute SuperSport defence held them at bay and managed to hold out for a 1-0 win.
