Sporting to play Cup final after attack

According to reports in Portuguese media, a group of 50 ultras attacked players, staff and vandalised the club's academy grounds after they failed to qualify for their UEFA Champions League on the final day of the season.

Sporting's star striker Bas Dost was left needing stitches after being struck on the head with a belt but has also signed the agreement to face Aves on Sunday.

Sporting released a statement after the attack claiming they 'vehemently condemned acts of vandalism and aggression to athletes', while there's said to be a real fear that the core of the squad will seek moves away from the club.

However, in the official statement released by the club, the players will 'honour their status as professionals', despite fears over their safety.
