Salmon back at Supersport

Salmon’s experience, having played in Holland and Greece, is expected to add a new dimension to the club that will represent South Africa in the next edition of the the CAF Champions League.

Supersport Technical Director Stan Matthews explains: “Glen’s still just 30 years of age and with a few years before the World Cup, the timing couldn’t be better for a striker that still has a lot to offer his country,” Matthews says.

_quote In what could be one the most astute signings ahead of the new season, Salmon has a real opportunity to add value to the League champions.

Coach Gavin Hunt tells “Glen knows how to finish, has a great touch and can play with his back to goal. I know that he’s extremely fit and am looking forward to working with him.”

With three caps for Bafana Bafana, the most recent in a friendly against Namibia in Windhoek back in August 2006, Salmon believes he has more to offer Bafana Bafana, but says this was not his reason for coming home.

“I had another year to go in Greece, but it’s a difficult place to work. You need patience and I was running out of this. Going back to Holland was an option, but it was time to bring my family back home,” Salmon says.

“I heard there were other PSL clubs interested, but I know Supersport. It’s a sound club. I’ve got a three year deal and am excited about the challenge.

“As for Bafana, I’ve had a strange history with the team. For some reason I believe there’s more of a chance to play for your country when you’re here in South Africa. But it’s not the main reason for coming home.

“The main reason was to bring my wife and two kids back to Alberton so we can be near to both our parents and many of our friends.”

The season Salmon left Supersport, in 1998/99, he had scored 12 times in 31 PSL appearances. He spent three and a half seasons at Dutch club NAC Breda, scoring 35 goals in 97 League appearances.

He then moved to FC Groningen where he continued with his good form, scoring 25 times in 118 League appearances.

His last club was PAOK in Greece where he notched up 4 goals in 24 League appearances.
