Pirates beat Urban Warriors

It was the perfect start for the Buccaneers as some swift passing and intelligent inter-changes saw Mbuyane find the back of the net in only the fifth minute of the match.

Daine Klate picked up the ball on the left side of the field and played a well weighted pass to Benni McCarthy on the edge of the box who then laid the ball off to an unmarked Mbuyane ten-yards out. The Pirates man made no mistake side-footing the ball past a stranded Sander Westerveld, 1-0.

Five minutes later and Siyabonga Sangweni should have doubled his side’s lead when a right wing cross found its way to him, unmarked, at the back post and 12-yards out from goal. But the Buccaneers defender rushed his shot, when he had more time, and fired well over the target.

Pirates definitely controlled the opening exchanges of the first 45, but as the half progressed Ajax certainly found their footing and in fact finished the stronger of the two teams.

The closest the Urban Warriors came to finding an equaliser, though, came a minute before the break when Khama Billiat let fly with a stinging 22-yard shot that just skimmed the wrong side of the right hand upright.

The start of the second half saw Ajax looking the fresher side and they began dictating terms, but still, despite all their possession, they failed to even force Moeneeb Josephs into a save.

Instead, the first decent opening of the second Stanza went the way of Pirates in the 67th minute. A corner was whipped in and Mbuyane should have found his second goal when he met it with a powerful header, but his attempt went over the crossbar from six-yards out.

Finally, in the 79th minute Ajax forced Josephs into a significant save. Substitute Lebohang Manyama drove into the box and unleashed a 16-yard pile driver that was parried over the crossbar by the keeper.

In the final minute of regular time Josephs was called into action again, this time making one of the saves of the season as he denied George Maluleka from ten yards out, diving full stretch to his left to make the finger tip save to parry the shot away.

That save saw Pirates hold onto the lead and eventually the win.
