That’s the agreement between the Dube Birds management and the German coach as “desperate times call for desperate measures” according to the statement released by the team this morning.
Swallows are winless and bottom of the log after losing seven of their eight League matches so far and Zobel’s days are numbered owing to the bad run.
The game against Matsatsantsa at the Dobsonville Stadium has been billed as a cup Final. “Management and the head coach have come to an agreement,” reads the statement.
“Under the present unacceptable circumstances that we find ourselves in, with the Dube Birds at the bottom of the PSL log table, we need to take serious measures as one of the Soweto Giants and oldest clubs in this country's football history. It has been agreed between management, the coaching staff and the players, that Saturday night's game against SuperSport United is a "Cup Final" for the coach,” Swallows says, adding anything but a win and the axe will fall on the beleaguered Zobel saying it is up to the players to save Zobel from the axe.
“Unless we win, Rainer Zobel will step aside and someone else will be appointed to take over the running of the team. We hope that everyone rallies around, and that the players will do their best to ensure that this does not happen. We have great faith in the ability and qualifications of our coach and coaching staff… however, desperate times call for desperate measures,” they say.
Zobel, though, will be kept in an advisory capacity in the event of a loss.
“And in the event that we do not get any points this Saturday, coach Rainer Zobel will remain in the club's employ in an advisory capacity simply because he wishes to ensure that he supports the team to get out of this precarious and unprecedented position, but the job of Head Coach will be passed to other hands,” the statement concludes.
Gordon Igesund and Muhsin Ertugral, among others, have been linked to Swallows’ head coach position.
