The midfielder was thought to be in line for a return to the national side when they travel to Congo for a Nations Cup qualifier against Congo after his self-imposed exile but has suggested that date in not set in stone. Asked by KickOffGhana.com on a recent visit to Accra if that March return date was still on, the player only said: “I have not said anything but I am still going to come back. Once I am fit and confident I will always come back.” Essien has been in outstanding form for Chelsea this season after a long term injury. But he has asked for time away from the national team even though the Ghana Football Association has always said he is due to return in March. "Essien never said he will not play for Ghana again," GFA Kwesi Nyantekyie pointed out. "He merely asked for time away from the team but has now told us he will be available for selection in March." His latest comments though suggest it might not be that straight forward.
