Ndlovu made history on Monday when he became the first Maritzburg player to be named the Absa Premiership Player of the Month for January.
He starred in five games for Fadlu Davids' side last month, notably providing all the assists in a 3-0 thrashing of high-flying Free State Stars at Goble Park.
Ndlovu's rise is no surprise to Xolani Madlala, who coached the 21-year-old at the now-defunct Umgungundlovu Academy of Sport in Pietermaritzburg.
During his junior days, Ndlovu impressed as a stocky striker and was nicknamed 'Mbesuma' in reference to ex-Kaizer Chiefs hitman Collins Mbesuma, who holds the PSL record for most goals in a season with 35 strikes in 2004/05.
“To be quite honest, "Mbesuma" [Ndlovu] could’ve been a regular from last season and not [just] this season. But thanks to Fadlu, because most of the coaches they believe in experienced players and so on,” Madlala tells KickOff.com.
“But for me, the way he has played so far this season, he can be the Player of the Year. Which player has performed consistently? Even Percy Tau, he [Ndlovu] marked him out of the game against Mamelodi Sundowns. And which player has he come across and struggled? None.
“He can win the young player of the year and the player of the season. He can win those two easily because like I said, which player has performed more than him? No one. Even when Maritzburg have lost a game you could see his performance.”
