In a season where Mourinho went on a famous rant about 'football heritage' in reference to teams with a culture of winning attaining success at the highest level - his comments do not spring a surprise.
Mourinho based his World Cup predictions on the basis of the African giants being ousted by more experienced sides in Group A, which comprise Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and hosts Russia.
Despite the seven-time AFCON champions having one of the more favourable groups in contrast to their African counterparts, Mourinho believes their fixture against the Russians will be the pivotal moment.
"Uruguay is going to win the group. They have experience, top players, and the right mentality," he told the media, as quoted by King Fut.
"I think Russia will finish second and the crucial match will be Russia against Egypt."
Despite his reservations of Hector Cuper's side, he went on to tip Senegal to finish as Group H winners with Poland claiming the second place ahead of Colombia.
