'Messi dependence hurting Argentina'

Messi, 31, a five-time winner of the Ballon d'Or and widely considered as the greatest player of all time has yet to win a major title with the South American giants.

The recent shortcomings at the 2018 FIFA World Cup further highlighted the problems within La Albiceleste, as they struggled to make a notable impression once their captain was stifled by defensive-minded opposition.

And former Manchester United midfielder Veron feels it's time to take a different route.

"It's time to build a group," he told ESPN Argentina. "Obviously, if Leo is eager [to be part of the national team], they would need to involve him little by little.

"I think we have to prepare the base and once and for all think about a team and not think about someone who can save us. Even more at this time, watching other national teams and how they faced the World Cup, it seems essential to think about a group."
