The hosts fell behind in front of their expectant crowd after just two minutes when Real Sociedad were awarded a penalty. Mikel Merino dribbled through the entire Madrid defence before entering the penalty area on the right and getting clumsily dragged down by Casemiro. Willian Jose made no mistake from the spot.
Vinicius came close for Real in the 17th minute when he showed his pace to burst in to the penalty area but Geronimo Rulli was quick to come off his line and close down the angle.
Sociedad were pressing the Madrid midfield and causing all sorts of disruptions. The combination of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric were not allowed to settle, with many of their usual passing lanes closed down.
Real Madrid winger Lucas Vasquez then hit the post on the stroke of half-time when his intended cross looped over the head of Rulli and on to the far post before bouncing out.
Soon after the interval, Raphael Varane came close for the hosts when his shot was cleared off the line after a goalmouth melee before Spain left-back Mikel Oyarzabal came close at the other end to doubling the lead.
Things went from bad to worse for the home team in the 61st minute when Vasquez received a second yellow card and subsequent red card for a standard foul on Merino to prevent a counter attack in the centre circle.
Soon after, Real had a decent penalty shout turned down after Vinicius was felled in the area before Rulli was called in to action once again moments later from a Ramos header.
And in the 83rd minute the salt appeared to be well and genuinely rubbed in to the wounds of the Real players as Ruben Pardo's header made sure the points were in the bag with Willian Jose this time turning provider.
