Mbappe, 19, has already forged a reputation as a global sporting icon after securing a £166m transfer to PSG from AS Monaco, ranking him as the second most expensive transfer of all-time behind the Selecao superstar.
In his first season he picked up the domestic treble, won the 2018 FIFA World Cup and went on to feature of the front cover of Time Magazine - but teammate Alves believes he is still a few steps from the level of his compatriot.
With 11 goals and five assists in nine games, with an average of a goal in every 64 minutes in the French top-flight this season, the former FC Barcelona wing-back has revealed how Messi will play an indirect role in his development.
"I believe Neymar and Mbappe have different profiles," the 35-year-old Brazilian told Goal.
"Mbappe will become one of the historical players in football, but I believe Neymar has already reached that level. Mbappe is still in the process of getting there.
"But I think that if Mbappe is clever, which he is, he will not waste the opportunity to learn from Neymar.
"I say that because Neymar learned a lot from [Lionel] Messi. It is a chain of learning, a sequence."
