SuperSport started well when Anthony Laffor hit a powerful shot from outside the box in the second minute, but was denied by the crossbar with Wayne Sandilands well-beaten.
Sundowns won a free kick in the 11th minute and Katlego Mphela blasted it against Rowen Fernandez. It was game on at this stage.
The reigning PSL champions continued to dominate, though and in the 33rd minute missed a great chance to draw first blood. Kermit Erasmus was picked with a pass on the right and he hit a low cross, which Sandilands got down to push away but the ball fell to Letladi Madubanya, whose shot crashed against the upright.
The score was 0-0 at the interval, but it was clear Matsatsantsa were very much the better side.
Back for the second half and Erasmus shrugged off the attention of Siyanda Xulu in the 57th minute and the nippy striker laid on the pass for Laffor, who was wide on the right, but the Liberian’s attempt was saved by Sandilands, who at this stage was standing between SuperSport and victory.
Two minutes later Erasmus sent in a cross from the right and Mario Booysen flicked it on with a header and Sandilands again pushed it away, but this time it fell on Morgan Gould’s path, but the Matsatsantsa skipper failed to capitaliuse when his left footed shot was too weak and came off a Sundowns player.
Antonio Lopez Habas was restless on the touchline and decided to take off Siyabonga Ngubane and brought in Papi Zothwane in the 64th minute, but nonetheless SuperSport still looked the more likely to score.
Madubanya missed a great chance in the 65th minute when one-on-one with Sandilands he shot straight at the keeper.
However, SuperSport had the last laugh. Laffor hit the post after some good work by Madubanya in the box and the ball fell kindly to Erasmus who hit it into an open net in the 84th minute to steal it at the death for Gavin Hunt.
