Cosmos beat Black Leopards 1-0 on Saturday via a Siyabonga Nhlapho goal and Bay’s 2-2 away draw with African Warriors was sufficient for the Port Elizabeth outfit to join Ezenkosi’s PSL challenge. Siyabonga Nontshinga and Lungelo Yekiso were the men responsible for Umlilo reaching their target, and after Thanda Royal Zulu cruised to a 3-1 win over doomed Hanover Park, the Richards Bay side requires just one win in their final two games to finish as runners-up. University of Pretoria have now leap-frogged Leopards into that all-important second spot after thrashing United 3-0 at Botshabelo thanks to Thokozani Sekotlong’s brace and a single strike from Dennis Omino, however, Tuks may also yet qualify for the play-offs if Leopards are deducted points for allegedly fielding the improperly registered Edgar Manaka. In other matches, there were wins for Carara Kicks and FC AK, who beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1, Dynamos 2-1, respectively, while Witbank Spurs and Batau played out a goalless draw at Puma Rugby Stadium. Nathi Lions and FC Cape Town also shared the spoils in an exciting match in Parow, where the KZN side took the lead in the fourth minute when Darren Dicks forced a fierce, awkward bouncing shot from Bhekekhaya Makhanya into his own net. Thereafter it was end-to-end stuff with the home side missing a number of opportunities until Morne Davids, who had earlier watched his free kick tipped over the bar by the tall Innocent Zikalala, blasting a similar attempt through the wall giving the ‘keeper absolutely no chance at all. Nathi almost won it at the death but luck was not on their side and they need to collect at least three points out of a possible six to remain in the NFD and relegate Hanover who are four points adrift.
