Isaacs sinks Pirates

The defending league champions deserved their win, outplaying Pirates for large parts of the game, and scoring a winner through defender Rudi Isaacs.

They are now one point ahead of Ajax Cape Town at the summit of the Premiership, but have played a game more than the Urban Warriors, while Pirates stay in sixth.

SuperSport took the lead after 13 minutes as Masibusane Zongo’s corner was flicked on at the near post and Isaacs arrived unmarked at the back stick to head home.

Isaacs incredibly almost made it 2-0 when he again arrived at the back post, this time from a deep free-kick, but just failed to get a touch on the ball and it went behind for a goal-kick.

Lebohang Mothibantwa was lucky not to receive a red card for a ‘studs-up’ challenge on Elias Pelembe, receiving a just a booking instead from referee Jonas Nhlapo.

It took Pirates until the 26th minute to have a shot on target as Teko Modise’s free-kick warmed the palms of Denis Onyango, but was comfortable for the keeper in the end.

Zongo fed debutant Norman Smith four minutes before halftime, but the former Golden Arrows and Thanda Royal Zulu striker shot just wide of the target.

A terrible mistake from Pirates captain Lehlohonolo Seema just after the break saw Zongo steam forward with the ball in a two-on-one situation with Smith for company, but his weak ball to his teammate allowed the Bucs defence to clear the danger.

Minutes later the excellent Zongo almost set up Smith again with an brilliant ball across goal that the striker failed to control.

Fikru Tefera came on for the injured Smith with 20 minutes to go and almost immediately worked some space for himself on the edge of the penalty-area, but the shot went wide of the far post.

Zongo was again the provider as he curled a beautiful low cross from the left, but Pelembe, with the goal at his mercy, didn’t get a good connection and the ball went wide.

In a rare attack for Pirates, Modise did well to set-up Benson Mhlongo from almost on the penalty-spot, but the finish was woeful and couldn’t even force a save from Onyango.

Pirates substitute Reason Chiloane saw a snap-shot go over the bar as Pirates finished the game the stronger side, but couldn’t find a way past Onyango.
