How Bafana talent Brooks rose to the top

Bafana Bafana rising star Ethan Brooks has taken an unconventional route to the top, from amateur football to shining on the international stage.

Brooks – who is on the books of TS Galaxy – has had a meteoric rise in breaking into the Bafana Bafana squad.

The diminutive midfielder went from featuring in the Cosafa Cup to starring in Monday's 1-0 win over Ghana in a World Cup qualifier.

Still only 20-years-old, Brooks has taken the unconventional route of being discovered at amateur side Panorama FC, by TS Galaxy to featuring for Bafana Bafana.

"I have known the boy since he was 12-years-old when we scouted him for Panorama FC from Jabez FC ahead of the VW tournament," says Michael Michael, former chairman at Panorama.

"From there he was under me all the time and I took him to tournaments in Portugal, Italy and then to local sides such as SuperSport United for the Champions of Champions.

"But I wouldn't let him sign for anyone even when he had offers from Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. The boy could have left but I told him to wait and then we did a deal with TS Galaxy. I was the head of youth and I recommended him to Dan Malesela.

"He trained with Galaxy and when they were interested in signing him, he had already decided to leave to sign for BidVest Wits but I convinced his father to bring him back.

"The boy's father luckily listened, he is my boy and has always been my boy. He has always been a good player and his father has always listened even though Ethan was sometimes wanting the big things early."

Michael has now predicted even bigger things for the talented midfielder with a lucrative transfer a possibility.

"It is good to see when players start from nothing and end up at the right places. Even last year when he wasn't playing, I spoke to his father to try and find a way to get him to a club in Europe.

"Unfortunately, ridiculous amounts were being asked for a loan deal and this was before all the call-ups which led to his dad becoming frustrated.

"However, since then he has played, shined and is now on another level and will soon need a bigger platform than where he is," Michael added.

Brooks has started both games for Galaxy so far this season after having featured in 12 last season.
