Larsen backs MDC sensation

The 22-year-old from Empangeni, who also won the MDC top scorer award, made only two appearances for Abafana Bes'thende last season, in the league and Nedbank Cup.

"At our team it's not about promotion," Larsen tells

"Because everyone in the team is eligible to play, so all the players in our Diski team are part of the first team. Even in the past that's why we don't announce that hey this one has been promoted, because automatically they get an opportunity in the first team, regardless the situation of maybe not having a first team contract. We are not afraid to give our youngsters an opportunity.

"The beauty of it is that some of them take the opportunity and move in permanently to the first team, like [Nkosingiphile] Gumede does, like [Lungelo] Dube ... just to name a few. So Conco is one of them. If our Diski team was not in the running to win the league last season he was going to play more games but he was very important to our challenge hence it limited his appearances in the first team.

"All our players are registered with the first team, every single Diski player is eligible to play for the first team. Our Diski boys train with us you know, so Conco and [Nkosinathi] Sibisi the captain, the defender and these boys, they train with me every day, so I know exactly what they can do. I see it every day and it's very easy for me to make a call when we need to play one of them.

"He makes the transition because he trains with the first team every single day. It's not a problem when it's time to step up and make a transition. It's not like he's been training separately with a different team. That's where we are different to a lot of teams. It's been this way for the last three seasons now, that's why we are able to produce so many players.

"We are hoping that it is up to the player. If his form is good you see more of him; if his form is not good you don't. That's as simple as it gets. For our sake and his sake we hope he has good form and if his form is good he will get more opportunities than he had last season. But he works really hard, so I got a feeling that he will make an impact next season.

"I think with him, number one he is very comfortable on the ball if he plays off the line and in spaces. He can even play as a winger, as a half-winger. But he's also got the skill, he's got the pace to take defenders on in one v one situations, which there are very few of those wingers left in the country. You know it's becoming a dying breed having a winger that can eliminate defenders and he is one of those. And lastly he's got a knack for scoring goals. You know for a winger to be top scoring in the MDC it says a lot."
