Free State Stars win Phakisa Cup

Stars reached the final courtesy of a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over Kaizer Chiefs, while the Sea Robbers beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 in their semifinal clash.

Free State Stars enjoyed the better of he opening stages and went ahead in the third minute of the game when Masehe slotted home with a deflected shot following some sloppy defending by Pirates.

Rueben Cloete almost doubled Ea Lla Koto’s lead three minutes later when he latched onto Jimmy Kauleza’s free-kick, but the winger’s header was tipped around the far post by Pirates keeper Robert Modiadie.

Tebelo Mofokeng wasted a glorious opportunity to extend Stars’ lead in the 16th minute when rounded Modiadie, but the striker sent his shot into the side-netting.

Mofokeng again failed to convert a clear chance in the 26th minute when he found himself unmarked inside the Pirates area, but he sent his free header way over the crossbar following a good cross by Cloete.

Lebohang Mokoena should have leveled matters for the Buccaneers in the 34th minute when he was play through on goal, but Stars’ keeper Kennedy Mweene rushed off his line to make a superb block.

The score remained 1-0 at the break.

Stars adopted a more defensive approach in the second half and although Pirates brought on more attacking players, they lacked the creativity to break down the Stars defence.

Until the 90th minute that is, when Thembile Kanono put Sepeke Manamela through on goal, and although the midfielder’s lob beat Mweene, his effort struck the post before being cleared by the Stars defence.
