Chippa United: The amazing rags to riches story

In the latest issue of KICK OFF magazine you can read all about Chippa United and the man behind the team's meteoric rise through the ranks: Siviwe 'Chippa' Mpengesi.

Chippa United are the first team to win back-to-back promotions from the Vodacom Second Division straight to the Premiership and, at 35, Mpengesi is the youngest club boss in the PSL.

Mpengesi's first job, as a car guard in Cape Town, earned him R900 per month, but laid the foundations for the man he is today.

'Chippa' then took a security training course, and registered his own company, Chippa Investment Holdings.

"No one wanted to do business with me because I couldn't speak English properly," he reveals. "I approached Pick 'n Pay and asked them if I could collect their trolleys that people were stealing.

"Those trolleys cost R500 each and when I collected 800 trolleys in one go, they recovered a lot of money and gave me a contract."

Since that day, it's been a case of strength to strength, until Mpengesi bought the status of Paarl-based Mbekweni Cosmos for R400 000 in 2009.

"Getting promoted from the Vodacom League to the Premiership is a great achievement, and something no other club has achieved before," Chippa says. "When I bought this club my vision was to make this history."
