Chiefs’ title challenge over

The draw signals the end of the Amakhosi’s title challenge as they failed to slash the advantage of League leaders SuperSport United.

This was a game Chiefs definitely had to win if they were to stand any chance of challenging for the PSL title and they certainly had enough opportunities to put themselves in that position during the first 45 minutes.

Coach Muhsin Ertugral tried to shore up an inconsistent Amakhosi defence as he introduced Dominic Isaacs into the set-up, giving him his first start in the Gold and Black of Chiefs, and he seemed to settle quite quickly along side Valery Nahayo in the centre of defence.

Stars were virtually non-existent in attack during the first half as they looked lacklustre and lazy up-front. The only concern for Chiefs at the back was the shakiness of Itumeleng Khune when crosses came into the box.

The Soweto giants’ game plan was clear from the outset as they continuously tried to attack down the flanks, especially down the left through Zimbabwean international Onismor Bhasera, who proved a thorn in the side of the Ea Lla Koto defence.

His first dangerous cross, of many, came in the 16th minute when he whipped in a delightful ball to find the head of Kaizer Motaung Jnr, but his header lacked any power and the keeper saved it comfortably.

Then 12 minutes later the Kazier Chiefs left-back produced another lovely ball into the box to find Abia Nale, but his effort was superbly saved by Kennedy Mweene diving to his right to tip the ball around the post for a corner-kick.

Again in the 37th minute Bhasera’s constant supply of quality from the flank was not rewarded when he picked out Arthur Zwane ten yards out from goal and completely unmarked. Zwane’s header had all the power but no accuracy as it flew high over the cross-bar.

The second half was almost a complete reversal as Chiefs were nowhere to be seen in attack. Stars applied all the pressure but they failed to create any clear cut chances in front of goal.

The game ended 0-0 and so did Chiefs’ aspirations of another league title as they dropped yet another two points at home.
