Carling Cup: 'The Benni Formation'

At the start of the 2017 campaign, a new element was introduced to the Carling Black Label Champion Cup when Champion Coaches were afforded the addition of Formation as part of the ultimate coaching experience.

This innovation has been well accepted and received by supporters from both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. With over 5 500 000 million votes cast to date, this has successfully overthrown the votes from previous years by far and is likely to have been influenced by the reinstatement of the FREE VOTING mechanic.

To honour and reward Champion Coaches for their consistent participation and support for the Champion Cup, Carling Black Label on Monday 3 July, Carling Black Label announced an exciting addition to the Champion Coaches journey.

The 4-2-3-1 Formation, also known as the “Benni Special” has been revealed as an addition to the existing 4 formations that are currently on offer and is likely to compete with the traditional 4-4-2 formation that is currently leading with votes ahead of match day, which is scheduled for 29 July at the mighty Soccer City Stadium.

The all-out 4-2-3-1counter-attack formation addition will also influence the players that Champion Coaches select for a more attacking approach to the game on the day.

Benni McCarthy, who is a South African footballing legend, has recently become a real life Champion Coach of the game and has advised fans to go with his special formation if they are looking to score goals.

“Formation matters, its how you play that determines the outcome of the match. The formations that Carling Black Label offered to the fans were very safe. I think more fans want to live on the edge, let’s allow them to do that. South Africa is laden with midfielders, many of whom can be used as a base for attacking your opponent,” said newly-appointed Cape Town City coach McCarthy.

“With the 4-2-3-1 formation, you can easily overload the midfield. There are five players in there, therefore you can dominate it and use your striker to occupy the opponents' defence for them to set extra players in the centre.

“It’s the perfect system to play for fans to see more goals being scored come match day.”

Orlando Pirates also made head waves on the same Monday when the Benni Special was revealed, particularly with the signing of Thamsanqa Sangweni from Chippa United.

Sangweni is the younger brother of Orlando Pirates legend Siyabonga Sangweni who recently retired after a string of injuries in the 2015/2016 season. Fans of Orlando Pirates can now start voting for the midfield maestro when selecting their teams. The same applies to newly signed Kaizer Chiefs players Teenage Hadebe and Philani Zulu.

The overall player votes are led by Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune with over 200 0000 votes and striker Tendai Ndoro leading Orlando Pirates with just over 140 000 votes. Champion Coaches, who have already voted for players that have been released, will still have use of their “Super Vote” which enables them to reallocate their votes to other available players.

Potential Champion Coaches who are over the age of 18 can stand a chance of winning the Carling Black Label Champion Cup match day experience where two lucky fans will join their favourite team in training, sit in the pre-match briefing and be part of the technical set-up on match day.

They can do so by purchasing a Carling Black Label beer and dialing *120*660*. They then enter their unique underliner code and then#. Entry is FREE on USSD or they can go to
