Cameroon defender on trial at SuperSport

Coach Gavin Hunt is spreading his wings wide in search of a replacement for the out-going skipper and the latest edition to the search is former Orlando Pirates and Cameroon centre back Luc Owona Zoa, who made his name with the Soweto giants in the 1999/2000 season.   After a decade away from South African football, the 31-year-old who played in Russia for six years, is on trial with the defending League champions.   When asked what can make him succeed where already established defenders failed to draw the attention of the hard to please Hunt, Zoa said that his past experience   in the Premier Soccer League - will keep him in good stead.   Zoa tells “I believe that the coach knows that I played here before. I played for Pirates between 1999 and 2001 I’m not a stranger to SA football. My performances were very good during my time for Pirates,” he says.   Zoa says that it would depend on the role that he will be given if, he gets the nod.   “It’s my first time so I will see if the coach is impressed for now. I’m trying my best to twist his arm,” says Zoa.   The defender was in Russia in the colours of Spartak Moscow and comes as a free agent. His height is perfect for a defender as he is the same stature as Khumalo.   The Cameroonian is confident that he will soon sign on the dotted line.   “I’m confident that I can do it. I can fit in well here. But for now I just need two or three training sessions and then will talk,” says Zoa.   Hunt said that he was still having a look at Zoa.   “We haven't signed a new defender yet. We’re taking our time in our search. I didn't want to sign the Angolan defender because of the work permit and his age and he was going to start playing in February. I need someone who can start to play immediately. As for Zoe we’re still having a look at him he has done well so far.”   Hunt said that he will give Zoe more time as he had planned a few things around him, if the defender passed that test with flying colours he might just be the man to replace Khumalo.   “There are a few things on the go at the moment. Yeah, we’re also looking at Old John Mabizela. We still have to negotiate with the club and I don’t know if Owen da Gama will allow him to leave though, but we will see.”
