Both goals came from the penalty spot, with Lennox Bacela scoring for the home side in the first half, while the league’s leading goalscorer Siyabonga Nomvethe converted for his side midway through the second half.
The visitors kept more possession with patient build-ups from the back, while Celtic threatened with quick breaks involving the likes of Danny Venter, Ruzaigh Gamildien and Lennox Bacela.
The hosts had the first chance in the seventh minute when Erick Mathoho was left unmarked inside the box to head on target from a corner, but his effort lacked the pace to trouble Greg Etafia.
Celtic should’ve taken the lead in the 20th minute when a quick break saw them attacking with numbers, but Gamildien fired his shot over the crossbar when he had options to pass.
Gordon Igesund’s men continued to keep most of the possession, but didn’t have much to show for it as they were kept at bay by the solid Celtic defence.
Nomvethe was able to get past the defence and the goalkeeper in the 33rd minute, but his cross did not find any of his teammates, while Mathebula shot straight at the goalkeeper and then over the crossbar minutes before the break.
Celtic then took the lead in added time when Bacela converted from the penalty spot after Luvhengo Mungomeni was adjudged to have handled the ball.
Both sides started the second half with more urgency, but it was the home side who came close to stretching their lead in the 59th minute when Thokozani mshengu flew in unnoticed at the far post, only for his header to go wide of the target.
Then Venter did well to spring an offside trap in the 62th minute to come face-to-face with Etafia, but his low shot was blocked by the goalkeeper.
The visitors then took advantage of their lifeline and leveled matters four minutes later when Nomvethe slotted his spot-kick after Mathoho had been penalized for bringing down Mathebula inside the box.
Both sides had opportunities to steal all three points in the closing stages of the match but Mathebula saw his freekick coming off the crossbar in the 84th minute, while Phenyo Mongala was denied by great goalkeeping from Etafia at the other end four minutes later.
