The France legend who won the award for three consecutive years between 1983-85 believes the Ronaldo-Messi dominance will end this year - but not in the manner football fans expect.
Modric has been tipped as the favourite to lift the honour after winning the UEFA Champions League and leading Croatia to the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
However, the 63-year-old believes the 2018 UEFA Player of the Year won't be recognised as the best of the 30 nominees up for the most coveted individual honour handed out by France Football.
"There has never been an easier decision on who should win the Ballon d’Or," he told RMC radio.
"There is only one player that has won the European Cup and World Cup (…) Normally there is a debate between Ronaldo or Messi, Messi or Ronaldo, but this year only one player has won all that.
"His name is Varane, and besides that, he is an excellent player… very, very good.
"Results are the only the objective factor,” the Juventus legend added.
"You can have your opinions about Griezmann, Mbappé… but the only one that has won it all, the two most important competitions, is Raphael Varane.”
