Atletico cement fourth place

Trailing Sevilla by five points at the start of the day, Atletico knew a win would help reel in their opponents who occupied the last automatic Champions League qualifying berth in the Spanish top-flight.

And they did just that, as Diego Godin, Antoine Griezmann and Koke were on target, putting the hosts 3-0 ahead, before Joaquin Correa’s late strike took a little gloss off the scoreline.

The win leaves Atletico in fourth, but just two points behind Sevilla in third, while reducing the gap to log leaders Real Madrid and second-placed Barcelona.

Atletico will also have continental football to contend with in their run-in after they were drawn against English Premier League champions Leicester City in the quarter-finals of this year’s UEFA Champions League.
