Arrows beat Stars to stretch good run

A first-half goal from Dillon Sheppard and second-half strike from substitute Thamsanqa Gabuza moved Arrows up to 10th on the log.

The home side got into their stride early on, and in the second minute Siyabonga Nkosi connected with a cross from Sibusiso Hadebe only to watch his header flying over the crossbar, while Collins Mbesuma was unable to keep a shot down two minutes later.

Stars then started to knock the ball around and almost found the opener in the 10th minute when Mpho Makola found Dove Wome on the right side of the penalty area, but the Togolese drilled his low shot wide.

In the 16th minute Nkosi ran onto a pass from Mbesuma on the left, but his strike was well blocked by Kennedy Mweene.

The match then lost its spark with both sides failing to test the goalkeepers as the ball got stuck in the congested midfield.

Abafana Bes'thende managed to break the deadlock four minutes before the break when Sheppard shrugged his marker off on the left side of the penalty area before firing a right-footed rocket past Mweene.

Ayanda Gcaba had a chance to equalise, when he ran through on the left a minute later, before taking a shot at the near post, but Gumede managed a block.

Stars had another half-chance eight minutes into the second half when Wome collected the ball from a throw-in on the right before firing at the near post, but Gumede was positioned well enough to see the ball into his gloves.

Arrows doubled their advantage when Thamsanqa Gabuza lived up to his 'super-sub' tag, finding the back of the net three minutes after taking the field.

The Arrows striker showed great composure inside the box, controlling a cross from Thamsanqa Mkhize before sidefooting the ball towards the bottom right corner.

Gabuza had another chance 10 minutes later, when he brought down a Sheppard free-kick, but his powerful strike went well over the target.
