The Urban Warriors started the match the better of the two sides and almost opened the scoring in the eighth minute when striker Nathan Paulse set-up Dipsy Selolwane, but the midfielder’s shot from just inside the area was superbly saved by Wits’ keeper Sean Roberts.
The hosts had the ball in the back of the net in the 14th minute through Marawaan Bantam, who latched onto Noah Chivuta’s flick from Bruin Senokoane’s cross, but the midfielder’s effort was ruled out after referee Paulo Marques harshly adjudged Chivuta to have handled the ball.
Ajax almost broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Russell Mwafulirwa latched onto Paulse’s flick, but the striker’s superb shot on the turn hit the inside of the upright, with Roberts well beaten.
Roberts produced a good save three minutes later when he saved at the feet of Nhlanhla Shabalala following a good build by the Urban Warriors.
The visitors continued their dominance and Paulse sent a header from Bryce Moon’s cross just over the crossbar in the 36th minute.
The match remained goalless at the break.
BidVest Wits dominated the opening stages of the second half with midfielder Marawaan Bantam forcing Hans Vonk into a save to deny the midfielder’s 63rd minute free-kick from hitting the back of the net.
The hosts threatened again two minutes later through substitute Marcos De Jesus, who sent a header just over from Senokoane’s free-kick.
Ajax almost capitalised on a poor back-pass by Almiro Lobo, but although Granwald Scott reached the ball before home keeper Roberts, his touch was poor and he could not retain control of the ball.
Scott threatened two minutes later when he headed Moon’s cross just over from close range.
The visitors took the lead seven minutes from the end when Eyong Enoh’s superb crossfield pass put Scott clear on the edge of the area, but Wilson Shendzelani’s attempted clearance sent the ball past Roberts and into his own net.
The Students pushed everyone forward in the dying minutes, but could not penetrate the defence of the Urban Warriors, who secured the win to move four points clear of Supersport United, who take on Platinum Stars at Olympia Stadium on Sunday.
