Stars made four changes in Sanele Mathumo, Sifiso Mbhele, Sibusiso Masina and Sthembiso Dlamini to City’s five in Sibusiso Sikhosana, Ayanda Nkili, Edgar Manaka, Vusimuzi Mngomezulu and Banele Sikhondze.
Barring the tentative opening, George Chigova palmed Yusuf Jappie’s free-kick around the post on 14 minutes as Ea Lla Koto posed the first threat.
Not long after, Nicolas Motloung headed narrowly wide from the far post following a corner, presenting the visitors their first sight on goal.
Stars pressed forward after that as Chigova got down to steer Sibusiso Hlubi’s left-footed effort for a corner 10 minutes later.
Veteran Rooi Mahamutsa’s snap shot from the right cannoned off the post in the latter stages of the half as they entered the tunnel locked at 0-0.
Entering the second half, Rise and Shine went for the jugular following the introduction of Charlton Mashumba and Wiseman Maluleke.
Stars fell behind on 62 minutes when Bongile Booi’s low cross found Mohammed Anas who made no mistake with a toe-poke finish past a flat-footed Mathumo, 1-0.
Zimbabwean Mitchell Katsvairo missed a golden opportunity to level matters when he nodded Hlubi’s cross wide ten minutes later.
With eight minutes to go, Rodgers met an in-swinging cross to head home an equaliser, 1-1.
Stars smelt blood after that and nearly stole the victory in the final minutes, but Chigova ensured a point for each side after staving off Hlubi’s long-range effort with a great save.
