The national Under-23 team was nicknamed Amaglug-glug when the team was sponsored by petroleum company Sasol, but after the sponsorship deal ended, Safa changed the team’s name to the South African men’s Olympic team.
“We are appreciate all the support our team has been getting at the Olympics, but we want to urge the public to stop using the name Amaglug-glug,” Safa spokesperson Dominic Chimhavi says. “This team is called the South African men Olympic team, not Amaglug-glug.
"The name Amaglug-glug was used when the team was sponsored by Sasol and this is a different team altogether. We are using the Olympic team name because this team only exists because of the Olympic tournament.”
South Africa will be playing Iraq in their last Group A match in the early hours of Thursday morning. The team drew the first match 0-0 against hosts Brazil before losing their second game 1-0 to Denmark.
