Arrows scrape past Spurs

Nedbank Cup

Following a disappointing defeat to SuperSport United, Steve Komphela rang the changes with Limbikani Mzava, Musa Bilankulu, Thabo Molefe and Siboniso Conco drafted in.

Making the ideal start set the wheels in motion for Komphela’s men, Lerato Lamola gave Arrows a ninth minute lead with a superb turn and finish in the box.

Set Parusnath decided to go on the front foot, but after getting into a good scoring position, he misplaced the shot from a slumping counter-attack on 29 minutes.

Heading to halftime, Knox Mutizwa went close to doubling the visitors' lead with an effort from the edge of the box that forced a sterling save out of Spurs shot-stopper Edmore Sibanda.

Despite gathering momentum, Spurs made a change three minutes to halftime in Lunathi Mdatyulwa for Douglas Skhosana.

Spurs came out firing in the second half, with a shot from Mdatyulwa missing the top of the net by mere millimetres.

Despite their dominance, lightning struck again as Lamola beat Sibanda from inside the box following a nicely laid supply from Mutizwa on 60 minutes.

At the other end, Arrows shot-stopper Nkosingiphile Gumede displayed quick reflexes to deny Khethokothula Zwane from point-blank range to keep Arrows in firm ascendancy.

The crossbar then came to aid of Arrows following Mdutyulwa’s free-kick from the edge of the area in the final 15 minutes.

Spurs were rewarded in the last few minutes when Slovo Mrawu showed good composure to turn his marker and beat Gumede from 12-yards out to reduce the deficit.

Athough, that wasn’t enough to stage a come back, as the experience of their Absa Premiership adversaries reigned through at the end.
