Celtic confirm Langerman protest

Nedbank Cup

Bloemfontein Celtic are not ready to let the issue of Mamelodi Sundowns defender Tebogo Langerman lie down without a fight.

Sundowns face a fine from the PSL for after Langerman was named on the team sheet for the Nedbank Cup final against Celtic despite being suspended.

Celtic lodged a protest during the cup final at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, despite the FIFA rule that only allows teams to lodge protests 30 minutes before the start of a match.

"Yes, we did lodge the protest," Celtic CEO Khumbulani Konco confirms to KickOff.com without giving away much information.

"I cant talk about this matter now but the club will release a statement soon."

PSL manager Luxolo September also confirmed that the PSL has received the report regarding the matter.

"Yes, we did receive the report but I can't comment," says September.

According to PSL rules, if a club is found guilty of fielding an illegible player during an official game, the club cloud be fined up to R100 000 and forfeit the match.

The NSL Handbook states: 'If a Player's name appears on the team sheet he will be deemed, for the purposes of these Rules, to have participated in the match except if a Member Club removes a Player’s name from the team sheet before the match.'

However, several mitigating circumstances exist that are likely to work in Sundowns' favour, with a club fine only being the most probable outcome should the matter go to the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber.

Some of these factors are the timing of Celtic's complaint, the fact that Langerman did not enter the pitch, sponsors' obligations having been fulfilled, and the limited time for any potential replay before the start of next season.

Ironically, Celtic's place in the Nedbank Cup had also been in jeopardy prior to the semi-finals after Witbank Spurs brought accusations before the PSL regarding Aviwe Nyamende.
