‘Tembo is a student of the game’

SuperSport will contest a third cup final in three years against Cape Town City in the MTN8 decider at Moses Mabhida Stadium (19h00). Matsatsantsa won the cup last year by defeating City on penalties at the same venue in Durban.

Tembo and Citizens counterpart Benni McCarthy both won the tournament during their playing days, so either man can make history by winning it as a coach as well.

Mosoetsa, who has been at United even longer than Tembo, says the former Matsatsantsa skipper paid his dues before being appointed head coach of the club at the beginning of the season. He had previously acted as an interim boss following the departure of Eric Tinkler last term.

"When it comes to Kaitano, coach Kaitano is a student of the game," Mosoetsa said of Tembo.

"He started nearly after finishing his playing career. He went down and coached the young age-groups. So he started from scratch like your Grade R and then 10 years down the line he's the head coach of SuperSport United Football Club.

"Coach Kaitano has been at school tournaments where you'll get those fields that most of the coaches didn't go to. He has been to that, at grassroots tournaments. So he has learnt a lot over the past 10 years.

"So he's one person who's prepared to learn more in his work and has learnt from great coaches. He has humbled himself, so he's one person who's going to make it in football and I'm so happy for him."

SuperSport lost their first league game of the season 2-0 to City, but have since won six out of eight matches, most recently thrashing Black Leopards 4-0.

Asked about that defeat to the Citizens, Mosoetsa said: "I think what made a lot of difference and more especially in South Africa is that people don't realise how big this country is.

"When you look at some European countries, a one-hour flight and you are out of the country. But when it comes to South Africa you can fly for two hours and then you are in Cape Town. So that makes a huge difference.

"So the first game we did our homework but unfortunately we just couldn't get it right. It is why I'm saying we were just settling the nerves in the first game. We had planned very well but unfortunately we couldn't get the maximum points."
