Erasmus all smiles at City

After four years abroad which included stints in France, Sweden and Portugal, the 28-year-old was announced as a new Citizen last month, playing the full 90 minutes on his debut as City beat SuperSport United 1-0 in their opening game of 2019.

Erasmus suffered a hamstring strain in the encounter which has ruled him out of City’s upcoming clash against Baroka, but apart from the niggle, has settled in well in the Mother City.

“I’m happy and enjoying my time here,” he told reporters. “I’m obviously disappointed I won’t be part of the team this weekend, but it’s one of those things – I just have to be careful and be ready for the next game. I am trying to get back as quickly as possible with the necessary precautions.”

The former Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United forward says he has thoroughly enjoyed training under his former teammate and now coach Benni McCarthy, and has been pleasantly surprised by the training sessions.

“I’ve been watching from afar, and it’s really exceeded my expectations,” he said. “I’m really happy I came here and joined the club. The training sessions have been great – every player wakes up and looks forward to coming to training and is excited to be part of the team. As much as I jogged around the field today, I missed being on it and being part of the team. All the exercises we do help us improve as footballers, so it’s good and exciting and we enjoy it.”

With Siphelele Mthembu and Matthew Rusike sharing the striking duty so far this campaign, Erasmus feels that healthy competition can only benefit the team.

“It’s always good to have competition amongst us as players, to push one another every day, not only on game day but also at training – that’s where you give yourself a chance to be part of the team. So healthy competition is good for us as players,” he said. “There’s no bad blood and it creates a good environment amongst us. We all push one another to be the best as a team.”

City face off against Baroka at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday evening, before hosting Free State Stars four days later at the same venue.
