Mabedi: We are on the right track

Amakhosi won the one-day pre-season competition after beating ABC Motsepe League side Buya Msuthu in the semi-finals, before getting the better of Free State Stars in a penalty shootout in the final at James Motlatsi Stadium in Klerksdorp on Saturday.

Chiefs used different teams for both matches, giving their new signings a chance to play in front of the supporters for the first time.

Chiefs fans finally got a chance to see former Mamelodi Sundowns player Khama Billiat in an Amakhosi jersey, while Lehlohonolo Mirwa and Virgil Vries got an opportunity to show what they can offer as the new season approaches.

Billiat set up former Sundowns teammate Leonardo Castro for Amakhosi’s first goal against Ea Lla Koto, probably a sign of things to come between the two players who formed part of the deadly "CBD" at Chloorkop with Keagan Dolly.

“The conditions [of the pitch] were bad. The combinations were supposed to be better than what we saw, but you can't control that,” Mabedi said.

"It was our first competitive friendly and so far so good. We are on the right frame.

"Our plan was also to try a couple of combinations and, at the same time, see how far we can go with the conditions we have been loading on the players. It doesn't look bad, we are actually on the right way."

What was pleasing for Mabedi is the young players he played on the day did pretty well.

Yusuf Bunting, Given Thibedi, Itumeleng Shopane and Kgotso Malope got an opportunity to shine, with new coach Giovanni Solinas expected to start training with the team this week.

"This is all about the future of the team and it is very important to give them a challenge and the experience. It is very important to guide them and give them the opportunity, and see how they can perform with the senior guys. I think they did well."
