Mendu questions Komphela’s competency

Chiefs coach Steve Komphela is under heavy pressure to deliver silverware in the third and final year of his contract after two barren seasons with the Soweto giants.

Fans are once again acting out against the former Maritzburg United boss, who needed a police escort after the team's 2-1 loss to Baroka at Moses Mabhida Stadium last weekend as unruly supporters hurled missiles and abuse his way.

Mendu has respect for Komphela but feels the ex-Bafana Bafana captain was up against it from day one at Naturena.

"I think it is a contrast from the word go from Kaizer Chiefs and Steve Komphela," said Mendu.

"We are talking about a brand that wins trophies every season, every season Kaizer Chiefs win something.

"He [Komphela] is my senior but he hasn't won anything, so it's a contrast from my side. I think a winning brand has to be associated with a winning brand, then you can win and you can go forward.

"I'm not saying Steve is not a winner but I'm saying right now I think Chiefs need someone who knows how to win. You don't build at Chiefs, you don't play on hope that next year it's going to be better. You win things, you win things, you win things and that's how I feel."

Amakhosi, who trail log leaders Bakgaga by six points after seven matches, will resume their Premiership campaign against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on October 17.
