Many times in the past Khune has been out of the national team due to injury, but has on most occasions found the number one jersey waiting for him due to the fact that no one really wants to hold onto it. Darren Keet and Ronwen Williams have been given opportunities in the past, but they’ve not done enough to convince coaches that they should start ahead of Khune, who is out nursing a shoulder injury.
Keet and Williams will battle it out for a place in the starting line-up for the final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group E qualifier. Baxter is not too worried that other goalkeepers have not stepped up to claim the number one jersey whenever Khune is not around.
“I’ve worked with Ronwen, so I know him very well. I feel he’s got more to come. I think Darren with his experience I’m happy to have him in the squad. You probably right that neither of them feel that ‘I’m the automatic choice’ when Itu is not really. It does not worry me, maybe the opposite. As long as they keep themselves calm and they go in with a cool head.
“I don’t mind people going in and saying ‘look at me, I want the shirt’. So they will get the opportunity to do that in camp and I don’t care if there’s a little bit of competition there, as long as they both want it in the right way. I want them to have a battle in camp.”
Bafana take on Libya in Sfax on March 24, needing nothing less than a draw to qualifying for AFCON.
